The Science of Losing Weight - Do Protein Shakes Really Promote Weight Loss?

Every time I'm surfing the internet I see tons of ads about weight loss products, people asking for help in losing weight, and lots others who ask directly about information on protein shakes. So I decided to write an article targeting weight loss problems and protein shakes information.

In order to understand what protein shakes are all about, we first have to dig a bit into the science of protein shakes.

What is whey? Whey is the liquid component of milk that is separated from the solid curd component in the cheese-making process. Whey protein is actually not a single protein but a collection of proteins and protein fractions found naturally in whey components of milk. Whey protein promotes weight loss in three ways:

1. Protein, in general, reduces hunger and eating more carbohydrates and fats. Whey protein does this even better than any other protein;

2. Whey protein reduces fat storage compared to carbs, fats and other proteins;

3. Whey protein enhances fat-burning effects caused by exercise.

Let's take a closer look at these three weight control benefits of whey protein, and what they do to help you lose weight.

1. In order to lose excess body fat, it is essential that you limit your daily calorie intake. However, this is usually easier said than done. Permanent weight loss can only be achieved if the lower calorie intake is maintained long term, in a way that it doesn't cause persistant hunger. Switching to a high protein reduced calorie diet is one way to attain this balance. By increasing the number of calories you get from protein and at the same time reduce the total number of calories consumed per day, you can avoid hunger, thus it will be easier for you to stick to your diet on long term.

In a recent study carried out by the University of Washington School of Medicine, 19 subjects were fed each of three different diets sequentially. The authors of the study reported that when subjects switched from the low protein weight maintenance diet to the high protein weight maintenance diet, they all started to feel fuller despite consuming the same number of calories. In addition to this, it was noted that during the unrestricted high protein diet phase, subjects reduced calorie intake voluntarily by around 400 calories less per day, lost almost 11 lbs, including an average of more than 8 lbs of body fat. Research also showed that whey protein is the most hunger-reducer of all types of protein.

So, why is whey protein more filling? Certain forms of whey protein contain high levels of a peptide called glycomacropeptide (GMP), which is known as a powerful satiety nutrient (hunger quencher). It stimulates cholecystokinin (CCK), which is a hunger controller hormone, to be released. Studies show that GMP from whey increased CCK release by 415 percent, whilst reducing the number of consumed calories by 20 percent compared to a placebo, when it is consumed before the meal. Whey protein was also found to reduce hunger by lowering circulating levels of the hunger hormone called ghrelin. In a recent Australian study it was found that a whey protein drink produced a prolonged suppression of ghrelin compared to glucose and fructose beverages. Whey also activates opioid receptors in the gut, thus causing fullness. Specific peptides contained in whey bind to these opioid receptors, which in return, communicate with the human brain to produce that pleasant feeling of fullness, helping to stop over-eating.

2. Research shows that whey protein blocks fat storage, thus promoting body fat loss. Whey is a dairy protein, and a number of recent studies have shown that increased dairy intake is beneficial to the body composition. Scientists are to this day still trying to figure out how dairy products boost fat loss in dieters, but they believe that calcium plays a vital role. Calcium is known to be crucial in fat metabolism and appears to reduce fat storage and increase fat burning when it is consumed adequately (roughly 1,200mg per day) during calorie restriction dieting. However, calcium is definitely not the only one responsible here. At least half of the fat storage-reducing effects of dairy products is attributed to branched chain amino acids (namely leucine) and a protein fraction known as ACE inhibiting peptide.

Internet Fraud - What is Scam?

Scam can be defined as a fraudulent business scheme, such as ways for obtaining money by means of deception, including faking personalities, fake photo usage, fake template letters, usage of non-existant addresses and phone numbers, and through forged documents.

Scams are commonly found through the internet. Lots of scammers are usually young hackers and programmers who use their deceptive skills to intentionally mislead a person or persons with the goal of financial or other gain. A scammer often works with an accomplice, technically called a 'shill', whose job is to encourage the scam victim by pretending to believe the trickster.

One can sometimes point out a scam by noticing certain contradictions in advertising. It is not always so, but in noticing contradictions, one should double check information from third parties before agreeing to do anything.

Bottom line, if people are deceived, mislead and cheated in a financial scheme, either by what is said or by what is not said, by what is done or not done, it is most possibly a scam.

International Shipping Solution Coming Soon

For many years now, we've been trying to solve the shipping cost issue for our international (primarily non-North American) affiliates.

THE SOLUTION

The ECA program will work like this:

Any company can apply to participate in the program (there will be a simple online application).

To participate, the company must be willing to provide SFI with wholesale prices on any products they wish to sell at TC (we're not going to allow them to receive the free traffic we generate and market their products side by side with our products unless they're willing to make it worth our while of course).

There are other requirements as well (more on this in a moment).

Once an ECA has been accepted, they will be provided with a special account where they can immediately begin entering basically unlimited product listings. From this form, they'll be able to enter a product name and description, weight, specifications, price, etc., upload product photos, and choose the appropriate department(s) for the product. There is no cost to the ECA to list their products on TC.

Once entered and approved by SFI, the listings will immediately appear in TC alongside all the other products in that department. They will also be searchable by name, keyword, VP, CV, etc.

Note that an order at TC always uses ONE shopping cart. A shopping cart may contain "TC Direct" products (such as Advanced Liquid Nutrition) and/or Private Seller items and/or ECA items. And all payment processing will be done by TC.

Example: We take an order for a widget sold by XYZ Company on September 1st. Upon processing payment, we forward the order via e-mail to XYZ Company (this would normally be within minutes of receipt of the order). We then send payment (the retail price, plus shipping, minus the percentage earmarked for us), electronically, to the ECA.

So, in short, the basic requirement for ECAs will be:

1. Wholesale prices offered to SFI
2. Acceptance of orders via daily electronic transmission
3. Orders shipped promptly and directly to customers with daily electronic payment

These are very reasonable requirements. And in return, some sizable and growing benefits will be theirs to enjoy. TC is already a top 25,000 website worldwide and we've only just begun. 95% of TC programs, products, and features are still to come. Traffic will, no doubt, increase exponentially over the years to come.

Size-wise, small to mid-sized companies are probably your best bets. You'll have a much easier time getting through to the decision makers and they likely won't have layers and layers of management to stall action.

There are of course companies to avoid, too. Grocery stores or similar stores that do not ship products to customers are probably not viable candidates. We will also not accept companies that sell adult or controversial products.

Note: As always, we have a zero tolerance policy on spamming so make sure you factor this in. For example, preparing a list of companies should include full postal addresses and/or phone numbers so that you can use postal mail or the telephone, not e-mail, to contact prospective companies about becoming ECAs.

Tip: Companies and businesses that are not yet selling on the Internet are great prospects too. This is because with our ECA program, we'll be giving them a way to jump on the Internet with all the heavy lifting done for them. If they can receive email, they can participate because we're going to provide the audience for them, take the order for them, and handle all the payment processing. All they have to do is ship the orders that we forward to them to the customer. That's it.
